Moreton Corbet Castle, Pre-Vigil Visit

A warm welcome from the team. We will begin by saying that this particular investigation is by no means our first. We have been to many places in the past however this one is the first that we are going to put onto this website.

These historic ruins are located inside the village of Moreton Corbet itself. Just 9 miles from Shrewsbury, we were privileged to investigate a place with such history. The castle itself was built by Bartholomew Torret in around 1200. It was build over a period of 500 years. The timber castle was first established in around 1100. It fell into the hands of the Corbet family by marriage in 1239, who gave their name to the village.

From 1300 onwards, the timber castle was slowly replaced with stone. The castle was extended in 1518 by Robert Corbet, who passed away in 1583. The Corbet family still own the castle to this day, although the site is managed by the English Heritage. Next door to the fortress is the substantial remains of an Elizabethan mansion build by the Corbet family in the late 16th Century. When Robert Corbet died in 1583 his son Richard inherited the mansion and started to transform it by adding features and furnishings he saw in books that were from Europe. The mansion was damaged in the Civil War and was repaired but then sadly fell into disrepair in the 18th Century when the family chose to live elsewhere.

The Haunting

It is said that the grounds are haunted by the ghost of Paul Holmyard. He was a puritan, who at the time of their persecution, was given protection by Vincent Corbet. But as the puritans became more fanatical, Vincent Corbet felt he could no longer provide protection and Paul Holmyard was forced to leave. Paul had to take shelter in the nearby woods. One day when Vincent Corbet was planning more building work, Paul appeared and lay a curse upon Vincent, and to this day the ghost of Paul can be seen wandering the grounds.

This first visit was to gather the history and take photographs. We will return very soon to conduct the paranormal investigation.

Moreton Corbet Castle - The Night Vigil

We set off from Crewe about 7.30 because the journey is around 45 minutes. We arrived at Moreton Corbet around 20.50 and distributed equipment. We started by doing a group walk-around of the whole area to familiarize the whole group of the surroundings.

Our medium was not with us this particular night so we had to concentrate on trigger objects, photos and video to gather our evidence. James Johnson our equipment technician set up a dictaphone in an underground tunnel beneath the mansion ruins and then met up with us all at the garderobes. We did a group call out which was video recorded and also recorded it on dictaphone in hope to catch some EVP. We asked around 10 simple questions leaving a 1 minute gap in between each one so we could play it back at the end of the night in hope of something answering us.

We then split up into 2 groups:-

Group 1:- Proceeded to the great tower and filmed Rachel Griffiths doing a call out whilst another group member was standing with her with an EMF meter. We did get a small reading which was just about audible; it was making a ticking sound every few seconds which was not as strong as we have had at previous vigils.

Group 2:- Sat by the garderobes being quiet and listening out for unusual sounds, 2 members felt what we can only describe as a cobweb brushing their face, After a short while group 1 rejoined group 2. Not long after this Rachel Griffiths got a major feeling of webbing all across the neck and face area.

We all returned back to the garderobes where we sat sitting quietly to refresh. Then the entire team went over to the mansion itself, over the top of the tunnel where James Johnson set up the dictaphone. We did call outs for around 1 hour but did not get any strange sounds or knocking. What we did hear though was a massive crashing sound from underneath us in the tunnel which none of the group could explain as the tunnel is empty and all group members were standing still in a circle.

We then decided to get our dictaphone out of the tunnel and all move over to the church where we took pictures in the graveyard which we did get some orbs on and an incredible tube like mist. We know these to be vortexes and are said to be gateways to our world.

We went back a few days later with our medium Leanne and she felt pulled towards the place where some group members felt the cobweb type feeling. We need to go back to Moreton Corbet as we don’t feel our time there is finished.
